Arnold Lobel
I’ve only recently come across the amazing Arnold Lobel. A very funny writer, he also touched great emotional depths in some of these simply told stories - and did I mention his beautiful drawings? He’s best known for his Frog and Toad books, published as part of the ‘I Can Read’ series, but I also particularly recommend Uncle Elephant, Owl at Home and Grasshopper on the Road.
