THREE COMIC STRIPS
BY STEPHEN WALSH
AND BRIAN O'TOOLE
These three stories about James Joyce and Samuel Beckett in their shared rooms on the South Circular Road were written by Stephen Walsh, author of The Acid Bath Case and contributor to Film Ireland magazine. The rich drawing is by Liverpool artist Brian O' Toole.
The first two stories, concerning Sam's experiences in the trenches of WW1, and Shem Joyce's adventures in the Wild West, appeared first in the Irish magazine, The Yellow Press (deceased), and later in Inkling (also no longer with us), a comic published by Potts Brothers of London.
Their two page epic, "The Seventh Trumpet", in which Shem and Sam take a holiday in King Ubu's guest house as dark clouds once again gather over Europe, has never before been published.
The comics pages are stored at relatively high definition because of the detail in the artwork. This makes them appear very large when viewed in your web browser. For greatest reading pleasure, print out the pages - they're sized to fit on A4 sheets.
