KODACHROME
Kodachrome is the latest collection of Raymond Scott tunes to be recorded by The Metropole Orchestra. Like the earlier Chesterfield Arrangements album, which I also had the great pleasure of illustrating, this CD was produced with The Beau Hunks and released on the Basta label.
Unlike most other Scott collections, the tunes on this CD were originally composed for the Raymond Scott Orchestra rather than the Quintette, and they're a revelation. Once again Mr. Will Friedwald provides extensive notes in the accompanying booklet.
While the Chesterfield cover art was watercolour with some colour pencil, for Kodachrome I did a painting in acrylics for the front cover, and rendered the back cover illustration in Photoshop. The reason for using Photoshop on the back was that I wanted to limit most of the image to red, yellow and black, to match the typography.
I came across a couple of interesting sites while doing research for the cover... kodakgirl.com is a treasure trove of historical Kodak advertising material.
One of the tracks, Fifinella, was based on a character in Roald Dahl's 1942 story The Gremlins. Raymond Scott had in mind a ballet based on the story, but the project was never realized. Disney published a book of The Gremlins which you can read about at roalddahlfans.com, and you can see an illustration of Fifinella too. Disney's design for the character was adopted as the mascot for the W.A.S.P.s, the American WWII Women Airforce Service Pilots. Here's the Fifinella patch worn on WASP flight jackets.
On the following pages you can read more about the earlier Chesterfield CD, and about the people behind both albums.
